Thailand has designated Royal Thai Army Nature Education Center (Bang Pu) as its newest Wetland of International Importance. This \u201cRamsar Site\u201d (no. 2578<\/a>\u00a0on the \u201cRamsar List\u201d), is a coastal wetland that includes\u00a0a mangrove forest, intertidal mudflats, coastal brackish lagoons and around 1,280 hectares of shallow sea.\u00a0<\/p>

These interconnected habitats support more than 440 species. Small natural canals that link the brackish water ecosystem with the shallow marine ecosystems provide food sources, nurseries and breeding grounds for multiple species found in the Site, including the vulnerable smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata<\/em>) and the endangered Irrawady dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris<\/em>). The Site has been registered an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area and an average of over 26,000 waterbirds are recorded in the Site each year.\u00a0<\/p>

The Bangpu Nature Education Center promotes an understanding of the value and importance of coastal ecosystems among youth, students, fishermen and the general public.\u00a0<\/p>
